Camp Tamarack and Farthest Field Expeditions are teaming up to bring you an unforgettable trek through the high country of the Sierra Nevada. We’ll begin our journey at Camp Tamarack’s basecamp. Here, we’ll immerse ourselves in a week of preparing for our remote trek. You’ll learn the basics of wilderness first aid through study and practical scenarios. We’ll learn back-country navigation using map, compass, and the stars. Each day, we'll study an aspect of wilderness life, from fire-by-friction to emergency shelter construction. We may even have a day learning paddling skills on a nearby lake. In the camp kitchen, we’ll prepare hearty meals and dehydrate them for nourishing trail food. And throughout our preparation for this journey, we’ll work to create a community, able to support each other as a close knit team.
When we are ready, we’ll swing our packs on our backs and, with a song on our lips, hit the trail! There is a joy and simple freedom in having everything you need on your back. Each day we wake to the crisp and clean mountain air. After greeting the mountains in our morning ‘sit spot,’ we’ll share breakfast and pack up camp. Our days will be filled with bird song, high passes, swimming in alpine lakes, crafts, wilderness games and skills, appreciating the beauties of nature, and personal reflection. As the stars come out, we’ll gather for a sharing circle.
When our journey comes to an end, we’ll return to Camp Tamarack to share with the younger campers some of what we’ve discovered on our journey. On the last day we say our last goodbyes, enriched by new friends, a connection to nature, and a deepened sense of self.
